Mucosal hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate is the most common cause for nasal obstruction and second cause for nasal obstruction is septum deviation. Turbinate hypertrophy can be treated as medical or surgical methods.

There are different devices are produced and different methods are defined for turbinate reducing (ultrasound turbinate reduction or coblation turbinate reduction, radiofrequency turbinate reduction, electrocautery reduction, ...etc). However optimal surgical procedure which used for treatment of turbinate hypertrophy is still controversial. Radiofrequency (RF) technology is used in medicine for treatment of many health condition. Radiofrequency devices are classified according to on the number of electrodes used as unipolar devices, bipolar devices, or multipolar devices. Radiofrequency energy induces ion agitation within the tissue, which increases the local temperature and causes a thermal damage in  the deep tissue without damaging the surface mucosa. The healing process secondarily cause to fibrosis, wound contraction and resulted with tissue volume reduction of turbinates.


Radiofrequency Turbinate Reduction Technique


This procedure can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia or it can be performed with other nasal surgeries such as septoplasty, polypectomy, rhinopasty as under general anesthesia. Local anesthetics are injected into the turbinate after lidocaine spray application (use of local anesthetic without adrenaline is important for understanding the areas with the highest growth). Submucosal areas of the nasal meats are then reduced in volume with a radiofrequency device. Generally during the process, the shrinkage of the turbinate dimensions can be seen. After the process, shrinkage usually lasts up to 1 year. The total procedure time is about a few minutes under local anesthesia. Bleeding may occur in the first few days after the procedure, and turbinates may swell over the first few days, causing nasal congestion.

There is no precise contraindication exist for radiofrequency turbinate reduction. However in patients with heart pacemakers or other electronic devices may be contraindication exist for the use of the radiofrequency turbinate reduction system. In patients with severe systemic disease (hypertension, diabetes, advanced stage cancer), hemorrhagic coagulation disorders care should be taken when radiofrequency turbinate reduction.

  • Thick nasal secretion, crusting, drying (usually disappears within a few weeks)
  • If excessive mucosal erosion is present at the surgery, fragrant crusting can be seen for few weeks
  • Nose bleeding (usually disappears within a few days after surgery)

Turbinate functions were not clearly understood many years ago and excessive tissue resections were done. İnsan papillomavirüsü (HPV - human papillomavirus​), en çok rahim ağzı kanseri açısından risk oluşturduğu bilinen virüstür.  Geniz eti ameliyatı genel bakış
Geniz eti, burun deliklerinin en arkasındaki bölgede bulunan lenfoid dokudur. Hastalar tarafından ve kulak burun boğaz uzmanı olmayan hekimler tarafından muayene ile görülmesi mümkün değildir. Endoskopik burun içi muayenesi esnasında görülebilir. Yan grafi, manyetik rezonans görüntüleme, tomografi gibi görüntüleme araçları ile de dolaylı olarak değerlendirilebilir. Çocuklarda yapılan bademcik ameliyatlarının tamamında ilave olarak geniz eti ameliyatı da yapılmaktadır. Bunun yanında, geniz eti ameliyatı (adenoidektomi) tek başına ya da kulak tüpü takılması ameliyatları ile birlikte de yapılabilmektedir.
